Iceland Time

Rest time is over! Time to hit the ground running and check out Reykjavik, Iceland. Flying to Reykjavik we used icelandair, each fair was about $160 and we flew home with EasyJet and paid around $140 per person. (this includes 1 piece of checked baggage as well.) Make sure you select that when you book your tickets otherwise they will charge nearly double at the airport!

When I was looking at the tours and what was on offer in Iceland it looked like it was pretty expensive and it was. Everything was really spread out and as there was 5 of us we thought it would be cheaper and easier to just hire a car, so we could just come and go as we pleased. We paid about $200 for the car plus insurance, that was through Budget and of course, I used Sky Scanner to find the flights and car hire.

Accommodation, we used air bnb, of course, paying around $1170 AUD for 4 nights, 5 people. As there was so many of us and we wanted to be able to chill out on a couch or cook we didn’t think we would be able to in a hotel. Plus we wanted somewhere nice for the time that we were there. I just don’t think a hostel would have cut it!

So What did we do?

Blue Lagoon – We booked a standard ticket about $65.00 AUD (I don’t think you need to book any higher, just take a towel and a change of clothes.) We had booked for the morning so we got to watch the sun come up, this time of year that isn’t until about 11.30am. We had amazing free mud mask and a few drinks at the swim up bar. I do highly recommend doing this! there were so many people in line but once you get in there It’s so big you don’t even notice anyone. It was about minus 3 outside but the water was about 38 degrees. It was truly amazing. Swimming in this amazing blue water whilst having a cider in my hand, a mud mask on and looking over at the snow capped mountains.

That is really the only thing we had booked while we were there, we walked around town, checked out the local cathedral and just looked around the city. We were also lucky enough to catch the Northern Lights. Again you can book a tour and they take you to the best parts of Iceland to see them but we decided to do some googling and asking around and did it our selves. Thankfully as we arrived just outside this little town we got to see them. Only for for about 15 minutes then they were gone. Every other night after that it was really cloudy or snowing so I think we were pretty lucky! If you are planning on going to Iceland for just the lights I suggest going North, you really want to be away from all the light pollution and in complete darkness.
